Looking for something
I’ve lost—
tucked in the pocket
of an old winter coat,
misplaced somewhere
in a drawerful of junk,
shunted to the back
of an overstuffed closet
between that heinous pink prom dress
and jeans that no longer fit.
I shade my eyes,
search the ground,
sweep the corners,
get on knees and hands
and peer under sofas
and chairs, looking
to find what’s lost
with the dust, perhaps
left behind at a hotel
in Denver or relegated
to the attic, the shed
overflowing with rakes, forgotten
in the back of the freezer
with the year-old hamburger
and last summer’s popsicles,
a bright piece of somewhere,
dropped along the way,
it was just here, I know it.
